Support Archbishop Naumann! Sign the Petition!
In an interview last month, Archbishop Naumann who chairs the U.S. Bishops Pro-Life Committee challenged President Biden:
“The president should stop defining himself as a devout Catholic, and acknowledge that his view on abortion is contrary to Catholic moral teaching. It would be a more honest approach from him to say he disagreed with his Church on this important issue and that he was acting contrary to Church teaching.
When he says he is a devout Catholic, we bishops have the responsibility to correct him. Although people have given this president power and authority, he cannot define what it is to be a Catholic and what Catholic moral teaching is.
What he is doing now is usurping the role of the bishops and confusing people. He’s declaring that he’s Catholic, and is going to force people to support abortion through their tax dollars. The bishops need to correct him, as the president is acting contrary to the Catholic faith.”
While pro-life Catholics welcomed Archbishop Naumann’s challenge to President Biden, another group of self-identified Catholics came to Biden’s defense and attacked Archbishop Naumann for fomenting “culture-war attacks.” They are gathering signatures to remove him from his post as chairman of the USCCB’s Pro-Life Committee. It would be wrong to remove the chair of the pro-life committee for doing his duty. Archbishop Naumann should be commended not condemned for insisting that the President of the United States live up to his profession of faith as a Catholic.
Now is the time for pro-life Catholics to act and signal to the USCCB that Archbishop Naumann’s public challenge to Biden is welcome and long overdue. He is treating President Biden like a pastor should treat any Christian who is publicly creating scandal and confusing the minds of less informed Catholics. He is treating Biden like an adult by saying, in essence, if you identify as a Catholic then act like one. Politics is no excuse for duplicity or inconsistency.
