LIVONIA, Michigan, (April 11, 2013) —The Schoolcraft College Jazz Studies Program will present a tribute to the great jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck on the Schoolcraft College campus on Haggerty road just south of Seven Mile Road over three days, April 20-22.
Dave Brubeck, who changed the direction of jazz in 1959 with his album Time Out, created and performed in a multitude of musical styles and genres over his almost seven decade career. Brubeck collaborated with the greatest musicians in jazz and performed throughout the world as an ambassador of music, culture, and goodwill. His legacy of innovation, creativity, and wide artistic appeal has made him a well-respected and loved personality through many generations of music aficionados.
The three-day event will feature guest artist Russell Gloyd who began his association with Brubeck in 1976 and has conducted many symphonic and choral appearances with the Dave Brubeck Quartet in the United States and around the world.
All events are held at the Schoolcraft College, Livonia Campus in the VisTaTech Center and are open to the general public
The program’s schedule is as follows:
Saturday, April 20
1:30 p.m.: “Dave Brubeck 101”—Russell Gloyd will give a presentation on Brubeck’s music and legacy.
3:00 pm. -Jazz combo clinics – Gloyd will conduct a master class with school and community ensembles.
Sunday, April 21
4 p.m.: An open rehearsal with the Schoolcraft College Jazz Program.
Elementary, middle and high school musicians are invited to bring their instruments and to participate.
Monday, April 22
10:30 a.m.: “The Sacred Music of David Brubeck.” —Gloyd will discuss the Brubeck Sacred Repertoire.
1:30 p.m.: Jazz Ensemble Clinics – Gloyd will conduct a master class with school and community jazz ensembles.
7:30 p.m.: Up Jumped Spring Concert which will feature Brubeck’s music for jazz ensemble, jazz octet, and
sacred repertoire with chorus, brass quintet, and jazz quartet.
General admission for the concert is $15; seniors and students, $10; and children under 12, $5.
