Blunt Amendment Fails on Party Line Vote

The fight continues in the House, courts and in November at the polls

By a vote of 51-48 today, Senate Democrats killed an amendment that would have allowed employers and insurers to find creative alternatives to purchasing types of insurance that violate their conscience and the teachings of their Church. As it stands the president’s health care law has set aside the conscience exemptions that have been in place for a generation.  Continue Reading

Urgent and Earnest

Today Congress began hearings on the HHS mandate… Has the Obama administration trampled on freedom of religion and freedom of conscience. Bishop Lori is there and we are joined by Missouri Synod Lutherans, the Beckett Fund and others. I hope you will hear about it in the commercial media. I wouldn’t count on it though.

I’ve noticed and you probably couldn’t help noticing how quickly the press coverage dropped off after the president gave them an opportunity to declare this over. It reminds Continue Reading

On January 20, 2012, President Obama informed Archbishop Timothy Dolan, the president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, that the Catholic Church in America has until August of 2013 to provide almost all of their employees with insurance that covers sterilization and contraception, including drugs like the ‘morning-after pill’ that may cause an early abortion. If the Church refuses to comply with this mandate from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), various penalties will ensue. The Church will be considered an outlaw, a bad neighbor and Continue Reading

Bishops Behaving Boldly (Audio)

It seems as though Catholic Bishops are under attack in the last few years. Just in the last week, CBS news and an op-ed by Kathleen Kennedy Townsend as well as the recent “American Catholic Council” Conference, attack the Bishops as backward looking, overly-conservative rigid old men who can’t embrace the future. We also have those on the “far right” of Catholicism who constantly point out the worst in the Bishops and lump them all together as a group of liberal, gay-loving progressives who all-in-all are Continue Reading

Imitate Christ or Imitate the Blacksheepdog

John Corapi has been one of the most effective communicators of what some have been calling “dynamic orthodoxy”. It’s really just basic Catholicism. But the truth has power and many people have been built up by Fr. Corapi preaching that truth. Others have returned to full communion with the Church, still others have come to know Christ for the first time.

So three months ago when a former employee alleged that he had behaved in a manner contrary to his priestly calling and his religious association removed him from active public ministry, dynamically orthodox Catholics grew dismayed. He may Continue Reading

Do You Know the Mind of Christ on Immigration?

al_kresta-125x130

Kresta Commentary

May 14, 2010

By Al Kresta

Christians are disciples of Christ. The word “disciple” means literally, “learner” i.e., a follower, pupil, or adherent of a teacher or religious leader. Claiming to be a disciple when you think you’ve got nothing more to learn is just plain dumb and shows you’ve got a lot to learn. Scripture teaches that when a disciple is fully trained he will be like his Teacher. Catholic disciples, i.e., learners, are followers of Christ who teaches them through His Body, the Church. So what has Christ taught on immigration? Do you know the mind of Christ on immigration?

I think the first response might be “Can I even know the mind of Christ on Continue Reading

The Catholic Church and Sexual Abuse

Part One: Why 64% of Americans Believe Catholic Priests are Perverts.

A new round of reporting on Catholic clergy sexual abuse in Europe has generated a new climate of revulsion toward the Catholic Church. In spite of, I suppose some would say, because of, all the media attention, however, the public has a grossly distorted picture of clergy sexual misconduct. No one denies that great evil has been done by the likes of John Geoghan, Paul Shanley, John Birmingham, and Marciel Maciel Dellgado and a thousand others. Not to mention the shocking neglect of authorities like now Bishop John B. McCormack Continue Reading

A Big Political Moment in History

After being introduced, President Obama steps towards VP emcee Joe Biden who, not realizing that the microphone was still hot, whispers to President Obama, “This is a big F***g deal!.

It is. Mark Steyn, writing before the health care vote, lets us know just how big and what’s at stake in the age of Obamacare.

“Sometimes you do live to see it. In my book America Alone, I point out Continue Reading
