God’s Bucket List: Heaven’s Surefire Way to Happiness in This Life and Beyond

teresa_tomeo-125x130

Scripture tells us only God knows the desires of our hearts. It was, after all, God who placed them there because they are designed to lead us to His will for our lives. Why, then, is it so challenging at times to figure out if we are on the right track when it comes to what we believe we want or need? God’s Bucket List will examine what God wants for each of us: mercy,  fruitfulness, fellowship, and peace, just to name a few, and will explain what the Christian faith teaches about these gifts and how we can begin to achieve and cross out, one by one, the items on that heavenly list.

More court victories against HHS mandate

Catholic World News

January 6, 2014

In recent days, federal courts have issued injunctions barring enforcement of the HHS mandate, which compels most employers to offer insurance that covers contraception, sterilization, and some abortifacients.

Retired law professor Howard Fineman noted on the Religion Clause blog that

•a federal district court in Texas, issuing a permanent injunction, sided with the Catholic Diocese of Beaumont and Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas
•a federal district court in Michigan, issuing a temporary injunction, sided with Ave Maria Foundation, Ave Maria Radio, Domino’s Farms Petting Farm, Rhodora J. Donahue Academy, and Thomas More Law Center,
•the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit issued an injunction temporarily barring enforcement of the mandate against the Archdiocese of Washington and associated charities.

More Developments In Non-Profit Challenges To Contraceptive Mandate

Religion Clause

January 3, 2014

As previously reported, on New Years Eve, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor granted Little Sisters of the Poor an emergency temporary injunction blocking enforcement against them of the Affordable Care Act contraceptive coverage accommodation for religious non-profits. The federal government was ordered to file a response by 10:00 AM today.  Here is the Solicitor General’s 37-page response filed today in Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged v. Sebelius,  (Docket No. 13A691). As explained by today’s Politico, Sotomayor must now decide whether to keep the temporary injunction in place, lift it, or refer the matter to all the Justices for them to decide to take one of those steps.  The Justices could also grant full Supreme Court review in the case even though there has not yet been a Court of Appeals decision.

In another development, on New Years eve the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan granted a 14-day temporary restraining order (full text) in Ave Maria Foundation v. Sebelius. The order temporarily bars enforcement of the contraceptive coverage mandate against Ave Maria Foundation, Ave Maria Radio, Domino’s Farms Petting Farm, Rhodora J. Donahue Academy, and Thomas More Law Center.  (TMLC Jan. 2 press release.) A hearing is scheduled Jan. 8 on whether to convert the TRO to a preliminary injunction.

Pope Francis: TIME Person of the Year — But Why? Is He Changing the Church?

al_kresta-125x130

Christian Newswire

December 11, 2013

This morning TIME magazine named Pope Francis its person of the year, hailing the head of the Catholic Church as a new voice of global conscience since taking office in March. He is the first non-European pope in nearly 1,300 years, the first Latin American head of the Church and a leading voice for the dispossessed. TIME says he took on a Church beset by scandal and signs of deep internal dysfunction, but there are signs that his popularity is revitalizing it. TIME
